==Research Notes==Margaret Robe Summitt [Robe-79] queried R. Douglas Lackey regarding a post he had made 18 Feb 1999 to the Rootsweb Lackey message board.
Mr. Lackey posted: "There is a Walker family bible found in the public library in Florance, Alabama. According to the bible, it was presented to William Walker by his Uncle William Lackey. William Walker's mother was Jean Lackey, a daughter of Thomas Lackey, Jr., who married Mathew Walker.
The significance of this bible, among other things, is that it provides a birth order and dates for the children of Thomas Lackey, Jr., which is not available in "Ochiltree" or the "Brick Church on Timber Ridge." It also identifies Jean Lackey for the first time, something neither of the two books mentioned do. The dates appear authentic, and indeed, can be matched to other known dates involving this generation of the Lackey family. Jean is the granddaughter of Thomas and Agnes Lackey."

Mr. Lackey replied 12 Mar 2002:"I'm afraid my information isn't going to be as clear as you would like it, but I will tell you what I have, and if you can make sense of it, please share it with me.
What I have are photocopied pages from a bible that was printed in 1851. The pages were found in a family file at the Florence, Alabama Public Library, by a fellow named John Lackey. I have had a friend check the library because I first thought the bible was there, but now I believe that there is just a file with some copies in it.
One of the copies of the pages, which appears to be generally blank, has written on it, "William Walker's book presented to him by his Uncle William Lackey." William Lackey was a step brother of Jean Lackey, and he lived and died in Rockbridge County Virginia.
The first full page of the bible information is devoted to the Lackeys, and provides the names and birth dates of the family of Thomas Lackey, Jr., who I know was born in Pennsylvania and died in Rockbridge County Virginia. It identifies the dates of his first marriage, and lists the children of that marriage, as well as his second marriage that took place in about 1800.

The second child born was Jean Lackey, born March, 4, 1780.
Second page continues on with the marriage and family of William Lackey, the uncle referred to earlier, giving the date of his marriage and a list of his children.
The part of interest to you begins on the third page, at the end of the info on William Lackey, and simply lists some Walkers. I will give you the info as it appears. It is in a different handwriting.

William Walker was born July 6, 1805.
Margaret R. Walker was born Sept 26, 1812 and was married February the ___, 1830. Now this is the tricky part. The next entry is for a Elizabeth Jane Walker, born Dec 15, 1830 (and died May 28, 1919.).
Logically, I would conclude that this is William Walker's bible, so someone listed the stuff on his uncle, and then someone listed the info on William Walker. That is, I would suspect that Margaret R. Walker is William's wife, although there is no real indication of this other than the reference to a marriage and the first child being born later that year. If Margaret R. Walker were a sister of William Walker, and got married, I don't know why the children would be so named, so I suspect my conclusion is correct.
The material continues on to list Theressa Berg Walker, Februay 3, 1833, (died 1872), MaryAnn Walker, born December 16, 1835, died 1918, Margaret Walker, born July 17, 1838, Died February 26, 1865, Rachel Gavenia Walker, Born June 21, 1842, died Jan 16, 1916, James Seaton Walker, July 1848, died June 2, 1856, William Thomas Walker, Born March 22, 1852, and died April 9, 1853 (I think, it is hard to read) and Alice Walker, born February 21, 1855 and died Nov 18, 1939.
There is also an inlay that indicates that William Walker died at age 77 on November 23rd, 1882, at Cedar Spring, Knox County, Tennessee.
And unfortunately, that is all there is. There is a writing on the pages that indicates that Jean Lackey married Mathew Walker, but honestly the writing is so blurred that I cannot swear whether there is one or two "T's) in the name. There isn't any information about when Jean got married, where they got married or who Mathew Walker's parents were. Quite frankly, since all the standard biographies completely omit Jean Lackey, and this bible was about the only evidence she existed, I don't know where to tell you to go to find more information on the family.
Since you were looking for an uncle William Walker, this may well be him, but I can't tell you anything further about his family. Sorry.

Doug Lackey"
