Jean-Baptiste was born and raised in Canada around Somerset, Québec, now known as Plessisville. He worked in Lewiston, Maine for a while in the textile industry and moved to Maple Lake Minnesota about 1884.

Jean-Baptiste was quick tempered and jealous which made his marriage a little rocky and difficult for his faithful but sometimes undiplomatic wife.
