Zephirine Caron

(25 Dec 1867 - 6 Sep 1941)

Her father was Cléophas Caron who married his cousin. She died when Zephirina was five years old and Cléophas' mother came to help raise Zephirina and her brother Alfred. The grandmother died five years later when Zephirina was only 10 years old. Her father never remarried and basically left the children to raise themselves.

'Of what we know of Zéférina`s family is not much. Her grandparents lived near the St-Lawrence River and her uncles were fishermen. I am not sure but it seems that she spoke of three or four Caron brothers who drowned and their bodies were found and buried by the indians. My mother also had an uncle, a priest, Thomas. Another member of the family was the foundress of the Sisters of Charity of Providence in 1850.

Following the death of her mother, her father distanced himself mentally from them. Finaly, his mother, a widow, came to live with them in Dayton to look after the family. She died five years later and Zéférina took charge of the household and of her younger brother. Her father never spoke. Zéférina always spelled her name Zeferina despite the fact that her actual baptismal certificate says Zephirina.
