Israël St-Hilaire

(24 Apr 1854 - 28 Oct 1900)

Israel had not yet attained his majority (21) when he could out-match any one in lifting or in any feat requiring strengh. But one day he overdid himself. He was picking up rocks with his uncle Jutras, who was also a very powerful man, and as the job progressed Jutras came to a huge rock and challenged the younger man by saying: `Now, if you were a real man, you`d pick up this rock and place it on the stoneboat!` Not to be outdone, Israel lifted the rock, but something in him snapped and that ended any further feats of strengh for him. From that time on till his early death he was never well. (The St-Hilaire Family by John St. Hilaire 1973)
