THOMAS WHEELER (1660-1735)


Thomas Wheeler was born 18 March 1660, in Charles County, Maryland, the son of John and Mary ( ) Wheeler.
He married, but the name of his spouse is not presently known. He was the ancestor of the Walter Ball who wrote the Wheeler History quoted herein.
In 1671, John Wheeler obtained a land patent for a tract of land called Wheeler's Addition. He then proceeded to pay taxes on it in the name of Thomas from 1671 to 1724, when he deeded it to his son, Richard. Thomas was only eleven years of age in 1671.
Thomas registered his cattle mark 14 September 1680 and resided at Port Tobacco.
There are many court proceedings and registrations of cattle marks for his children, and transfers of land which establish the identities of his children. He died intestate in 1735 and letters of administration were granted to John Wheeler, whom Mr. Ball presumes to be his son, 7 March 1735, with Ignatius Mitchell and Thomas Mitchell as sureties. (Test. Pro. 30, 146)
An inventory of the estate was filed 10 September 1736 by William MacPerson and Henry Brawner. It was signed by Ann Mitchell and Elizabeth Green as next of kin. (Inv. 22, Folio 72). The children of Thomas Wheeler included:

Charles County Court ordered that: the children of Mary (Bulkeley--the daughter of Charles Bulkeley of Barbados?) and Thomas Witter (deceased) be returned to her, Thomas Wheeler and Thomas Jenkins to be paid 1,000 pounds of tobacco each, and Mrs. Witter to be ready to go to Barbados and children to remain with Thomas Wheeler and Thomas Jenkins. Info on Thomas Wheeler and children from Lois Hall in a letter dated June 22, 1990, as stated in a book by Walter Ball on John Wheeler and his descendents. Lived in Port Tobacco on land given him by his father. He was in court numerous times in lawsuits with various neighbors. He took Peter Mills, who married Frances Slye Wheeler, the widow of his brother Ignatius, to court charging him with neglect of his nephews Luke and Ignatius the children of Ignatius and Frances Wheeler.

1693 - Thomas was around 32 years old and lived in Charles Co. Md per the will of his father John Wheeler written 11 Nov 1693.
"To son Thomas and hrs, 200a (unnamed) on which he now lives, and 230a WHEELER'S REST.
To granddaughter Ann, 165a WHEELER'S DELIGHT.
To grandson Richard, son of son Thomas afsd, and his hrs, WHEELERS DELIGHT in event of death of granddau. Ann afsd. without issue."

1710 - On Aug 12, 1710. Thomas Wheeler, of Charles County [Md], for natural love and affection he beareth to Richard Wheeler, his son, deeds him a parcel of land called WHEELERS REST and also a parcel of land called WHEELERS ADDITION cont. 110. /S/ Thomas Wheeler.
