Leopold "Leo" WESTON
(15 Jan 1888 - 25 Jul 1947)
Cheryl Gray says: Leopold was the first of George & Selina's family to be born in Australia. He was born in Melbourne, then 2 years later Selina was born in Brisbane.
The first information I have found for Leo is the 1914 electoral roll in NZ, he is a taxi driver living at Russell St, Parnell, Auckland. 1916 he registered in the NZ army reserves and 1919 again on the electoral roll, still a driver and at Parnell. Leo further appears on electoral rolls in NZ as a driver from 1928-1946, still in the Auckland area.
Leo's youngest sister Irene was apparently a favourite, Leo offered her a house to live in when things were very tough for her, being a single mum in the 1920-30s in Sydney. At the time of his death Leo had quite a portfolio of houses in Australia & NZ. Irene's daughter's, Doreen & Mavis, also tell the story that Leo owned a launch in NZ that he named after Irene. After finding nothing for several years we thought it was just a story, however, in 2017 a boat called "Irene" did turn up in a search on Google. It was for sale and mentioned on a blog. Sure enough, we were told by the owner of the blog that Leo Weston was a taxi driver and car dealer in Auckland from 1912-1935 ish and he did indeed own the "Irene". In 1926 he owned a launch called "Lulu" then had "Irene" built by Dick Lang in February 1927. It is also believed the "Irene" was seconded during WW2 for use by the armed services. Leo never married and is described as a gentleman on the index card for probate after his death.
In his will Leo left shares to each of his siblings except Selina who had
pre-deceased him. Her share was left to her only living child, Joyce Agnes Selina and her husband George Loader.
