Irene WESTON 🧬
(30 Apr 1898 - 11 Jun 1988)
Cheryl Gray says: Irene was the youngest child of George Weston & Selina Pike, she was born in Brisbane, Australia.
There is not much information about Irene as a child. Russ, her grandson, says that she told him she went to New Zealand 7 times, however, I can't verify this at all. I do have a photo of her and older sister Selina as bridesmaids at a Pike wedding in NZ in 1908.
She married Dalmorton Rudd in 1920 and they had 3 children, Edwin, Valvy & Mavis. There is a 4th child registered with Dalmorton named as the father, Maxwell Charles, however, his father is unknown.
Dalmorton had been previously married to Isabel Amelia Whitley in 1919 in Leeds, Yorkshire,England. Isabel was a widow aged 27 at the time of their marriage, however, she died just 4 months after the marriage of pneumonic influenza (Spanish Flu). Irene & Dalmorton married in Australia in November 1920.
There were 4 children born to Irene between 1921-1937, although all are registered with Dalmorton as their father family members tell me that Maxwell, the youngest, had a different father. There is an indication from electoral rolls that this could be the case but technically I cannot verify this.
The 1930 electoral roll shows Irene & Dalmorton at 171 Northcote St, Earlwood and also Howard Ave, Dee Why. Perhaps they moved and rerigestered during the year.
1933 & 1934 they are in Oaks Ave, Dee Why but 1935-1937 Irene is at the same address but Dalmorton is not, he is at a different address, In 1936 he was living as a boarder in Darlington Rd, Darlington, the home of Magdalene "Elsie" Roach, his third wife.
1943 Irene was at 28 Levey St, Arncliffe then in 1951 there is a letter addressed to Irene at 158 Victoria St, Alexandria, the home of her daughter Doreen.
Irene did move house regularly and often very quickly according to family stories, probably because she didn't have any money to pay the rent, She did buy a house in Heathcote probably with the money she received from the estates of her brothers Leo & Albert, they died 2 months apart. Leo had always been very good to Irene, he apparently owned a house at Ramsgate that she moved into at one time, however, I have no proof of ownership.
One of my favourite stories the family tells is when she sold sand off Harbord Beach. Apparently the place they lived in at the time was on the beach so she charged people to take loads of sand, desperate times.
