Individual Details

Sarah ELFORD

(19 Sep 1839 - 13 Jun 1879)

Sarah took the name Alford and married Robert Seaton. Having been born after her true father died it is not surprising that she viewed Jonathon Alford as her father.
Terry McGilvray says: She is in fact Sarah Bath the daughter of Thomas Bath and Jane Shepherd.
Her father Thomas died in April 1838 before Sarah's birth in 1838 and her mother Jane got remarried in 6 months to Johathon Alford.
Times were tough in England at the end of the Industrial Revolution so a widow of 35 years with 6 children under 12 years of age would not be a good prospect for a 23 year old man.
They immigrated to Australia 1839-1844.
Johathon was the only father Sarah knew so she adopted the surname Alford while her older brothers and sisters kept the name Bath.
Sarah died in 1879 and is buried in an unmarked grave with her son Henry at Inverleigh cemetery, along with her mother Jane Shepherd.
