Jonathon "John" ALFORD
(20 Feb 1816 - 22 May 1888)
John and Jane ELFORD immigrated from Hampshire to Port Phillip on the "Sea Queen" arriving on 15 Apr 1844. They were bounty passengers engaged by Messrs Hughes and Haines, Melbourne for 1 year.
Jonathon Alford was a jury member in 1853 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.
He is listed on the 1856 Victorian electoral roll as a farmer, Murrumbeet, freehold.
James death certificate shows Jonathon's occupation as laborer.
Jonathan Alford listed in the book title Barrabool: Land of the magpie is our ancestor (1st generation). This is a small paragraph which says the family lived at Modewarre for generations and it says the names of other family members (James and Anne and their daughter Fanny).
His was a paupers burial, he died 22nd May 1888, age 67 (though it also looks like 69 on the death certificate). Death certificate number 5842.
Terrence McGilvray says: Listed as Elford in the ship's records. Occupation labourer. Arrived April 1844 aboard Sea Queen, with his new wife Jane Bath, nee Shepherd and his step children: Anne, Charles, Thomas, William, John and Sarah. The ships record highlights that neither Jonathon (John) or Jane could read or write. The stepson Charles was listed as could read not write. Death register states age at death as 67. Typifies the practice of the day of stating younger ages when arriving in Australia to make getting work easier. The 1841 UK Census for Linkenholt Hampshire lists: Jonathon Elford 25 labourer born in this county (so born 1816) Jane Elford 35 born in this county (so born 1806) William Bath 8 (so born in 1833) John Bath 4 (so born in 1837) Jonathan Alford is listed on the Voters Roll for the Mount Moriac Division of the South Western Province of Victoria as a farmer occupying his own freehold land at Murrambeet in 1856. By 1882 Maning's Victorian Directory lists Henry and Jonathon Alford as being at Inverleigh while James presumably had taken over the original family farm as he is listed at Modewarre.
Name on death certificate spelt Jonathen.
Barbara Parry says: Jonathan Elford was Jane Sheppard (Bath)'s second husband. Married in 1838 (Oct-Nov-Dec) per Marriage Registry - register district Andover, Hampshire, Vol No: 7, page No: 67. (Copy of marriage registration/certificate ordered 03/05/2011 via GRO). Alford/Bath family arrived Pt Phillip on 25 April 1844 on "Sea Queen". Jonathan's circa birth year confirmed via 1841 census records (25 yo in 1841) when Elford/Bath family lived in The Street, Linkenholt, Hampshire. Approximately 10 years younger than his wife, Jane.
