Individual Details
Thomas Cantrill
(April 4, 1775 - October 3, 1836)
"Thomas Cantrill was born April 4, 1775, in Orange County, North Carolina, where he married Elizabeth Murray, February 13, 1795, daughter of John and Jean Murray. She was born September 19, 1774. John Murray was born in Pennsylvania and served in the War for American Independence from North Carolina, where his father and Uncle Robert Murray had moved from Pennsylvania with their families, previousto the Revolution. Robert Murray moved to New York City with his family later and it is from this family that the name is perpetuated in that city by Murray Street and Murray Hill. The Murray family were descended from a junior branch of the Philiphaugh (Selkirkshire) and Atholl family, of Perthshire, Scotland.
"Thomas Cantrill, with his wife, mother and a number of others of the family, moved from North Carolina in 1798 to Green County, Kentucky. In 1828 he and his family followed his eldest son, William, to Sangamon County, Illinois, where he settled on a farm three and a half miles east of Springfield, which is in possession of one of his grandsons and family today. His wife died October 1, 1836, and two days later, October 3, 1836, he died; both are buried in the family plot on the farm where they spent the last years of their lives.
"He was a man of determined character: firm, reliable and steadfast in all his dealings and never wavered from his ideas of right. He was an excellent example of the pioneer of his day, moving through the wilderness with his family from North Carolina to Kentucky; thence to Illinois, and literally hewing new homes in a new country." (THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908, by Susan Cantrill Christie, pages 41 - 42.)
