Individual Details
Joseph Cantrill
(Abt, 1777 - )
"Joseph Cantrill was born in Orange County, North Carolina about 1777 and went with his mother, brothers and sisters to Green County, Kentucky in 1798. Married Mariam Fugate and they moved to Bourbon County, Kentucky, where the old homestead is still in a fine state of preservation.
"He was a "self-made" man of fine character; pious, intelligent and industrious and made a fortune for his family. He was a colonel of state militia and was, naturally, of a soldierly bearing and disposition. His granddaughter, Mrs. Trimble, writes: "I can recall seeing him drill and command a regiment of State Guards, when I was a child. The plumes in his hat and the customary paraphernalia of the times made a lasting impression upon me." Another granddaughter, Mrs. Fannie Pugh, writes: "My noble grandfather, Joseph Cantrill, who of all the men I have ever known, represented in a higher degree the ideal manhood. I revere his memory and my soul delights to honor him. Reared under his paternal care from infancy to matured girlhood I cannot recall a single set, or word, that would not have won the approval of the Great Teacher. Nature has stamped him a gentleman, but he needed no culture in refinement; his life was the highest standard." (THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908, by Susan Cantrill Christie, pages 51 - 52.)
