Wynepark Tschudi/Judy

(April 7, 1770 - May 5, 1836)

"Winepark (Wynepark - Weinbert) Tschudy - Judy was born 4-7-1770 in Pennsylvania. The correct spelling of his Christian name in Switzerland is "Weinbert" and he was named after his great grandfater, Weinbert von Tschudi of Canton Basel, Switerland, the "famous Schoolmaster" of Frenkendorf. The name "Weinbert" in Swiss - German resembles "Winpark" in English long-hand writing, hence his birth record in the Old Judy Bible was confusing to many who could read and speak only English. This author hopes that this explanation will clear up all questions concerning the names: Weinbert, Wynepark and Winepark because they are one and the same. Winepark Judy was approximately 15 years old when he made that famous and dangerous "trek" with his mother and her children from Pennsylvania viz Harper's Ferry, Virginia up the South Branch Valley of the Potomac River which is now in West Virginia and on to Ft. Hatfield (in "The New River Settlements") now in Giles County, Virginia (See the complete story of this "trek" in the history and genealgoy of John Judy, Sr.). Winepark Judy was the 5th son and 7th child of Martin Tschudy, 2nd and wife, Anna (Boni) Tschudy who arrived in the Port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the Sailing Ship "Sally" on 11-10-1767, and Winepark was the 2nd child born in America. It is certain that he remained in Virginia with Jacob Judy, Sr. and the Hatfield family until 1795 or later when they settled near Paris, Kentucky in Bourbon, Grant and Boone Counties (formerly Bourbon County). We find Winepark Judy near Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky in the U. S. Census of 1810 and 1820 with a wife and several children on the latter date. He evidently made one trip back to Frederick County, Maryland where he married a pretty widow, Anne Lyle Tracy on 9-6-1800. She was the daughter of Peter Lyle. Anne was born 5-15-1778; Winepark Judy died 5-5-1836 and he was buried in the "Old Judy Cemetery" near Wades Mill on Big Stoner Creek, Clark County, Kentucky. She died on 8-5-1844 in Adams County, Illinois. Winepark Judy was the first child of his parents who could speak English clearly without a German accent. When he went to Frederick (Frederick County), Maryland, it was not to marry but to see his aging father who no doubt was living in
