"Richard Orrick Pickett, LL. D., C. S. A., of Florence, Alabama, born August 22, 1814, in Fauquier County, Virginia; died November 23, 1898, in Florence, Alabama. He was admitted to the Bar in 1848, and practiced at Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama; in 1862 he raised a Company of Volunteers, which were designated Co. H, 23rd Alabama Infantry, of which he was made Captain; in November 1863, he was commissioned Colonel of the 10th Alabama Cavalry and served under General Roddy. He was captured at Carnith, Mississippi in May 1863, and exchanged at Vicksburg, in September 1863; served as Judge of Lawrence County, Alabama, 1846; and represented the same in the State Legislature, 1853 - 55 - 57 - 61; he removed to Florence, Lauderdale County, 1867, and represented that county on the Legislature, 1884 - 1887. He married (1-8-1837) Fanny Louise Boggs, daughter of William Boggs and Margaret Sarah Wrenshall, of Pennsylvania (born 1823), a cousin of Judith Brey (Dent) Grant, wife of General U. S. Grant.
