On May 5, 1861, the Jackson Guards, Co. G, 1st Ark. Reg. of Inf., was organized, and was the first company to enlist from Jackson County in the C. S. A., and of this company he was elected Capt. and served under Cot. James Fagan; in 1862 he was promoted to the Colonelcy, for high courage and great bravery; commanded the 10th Mo. Inf., Parsons' Brigade, succeeding Col. Stien, who had been killed in battle.
