"William Henry Pickett, M. D., of Batesville, Arkansas, born December 22, 1826, in Limestone County, Alabama; died February 6, 1890, in Batesville, Ark.; was a graduate of Exeter College, a student at Yale, the Medical Department of the University of New York, and University of Louisiana, graduating at the latter in medicine and surgery, in the class of 1848; practiced his profession at Whitesburg, Alabama, until 1850, when he removed to Memphis, Tennessee, where he practiced, and carried on an extensive drug business, and by means of his slaves managed his plantations in Arkansas and Alabama; at the beginning of the Civil War these were laid waste, and his property in Memphis taken and destroyed by the Federal Army. He was exempt from Army service by Gen. Kirby Smith, 1863; left Memphis upon its occupancy by the Federals, and moved to his plantation in Jackson County, Arkansas; his home was burned by the Federals; at the close of the war he became a resident of Jackson County, and in 1867 was elected to represent his county in the Constitutional Convention, which met the following January. On February 6, 1868, he moved to Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas, where he resided until his death, which occurred on the twenty-second anniversary of his arrival; was a staunch and liberal supporter of the Episcopal Church, and a Vestryman. He married March 13, 1850, in Madison County, Alabama, Amy Raines Collier, born Oct. 8, 1830, in Madison County, Alabama; died July 1, i885, in Bates, Arkansas, daughter of heiress of William Edward and Ophelia Jane (Stewart - Slaughter) Collier, of Madison County, Alabama."
