Individual Details
Joshua Greer
(Abt, 1750 - Aft October 17, 1796)
"There was another elder Joshua Greer, probably the brother of Benjamin Greer. This man obtained several land grants on Mill Fork of Moravian Creek, which is in the south central part of modern Wilkes County, and made his will in that county 17 October 1796, proven November 1796. This will leaves his lands to his wife Sary for life, then to be divided between his children, except for his daughter Anne Hickerson (the others are not named). Executors were the widow, Sarah, and James Welborn; the witnesses were Benjamin Greer, Elizabeth + Vannoy and Ann + Greer (signed with a "+" means illiterate). The heirs of this elder Joshua are identified in a Wilkes deed of 12 November 1804, in which they sold their inheritance, as Elia Reynolds, Sarah Greer, John N. Greer, Jenkin Reynolds, Sally Greer, Hannah Greer and Jesse Greer (K:35). The Joshua Greer who was listed in the Wilkes Census of 1830 was probably a son of John N. Greer." (OUR GREER FAMILY HISTORY, 1983, by Thomas H. Greer, 335 Miramontes Avenue, Half Moon Bay, California 94019, page 27.)
"Joshua (Greer), of Wilkes County in 1787 and 1790. Will dated 17 October 1796, proven November 1796, names wife Sary and the following children: Anne, Elizabeth, Sarah, John N., Sally, Hannah and Jesse (along with some dates and spouses)." (OUR GREER FAMILY HISTORY, 1983, by Thomas H. Greer, 335 Miramontes Avenue, Half Moon Bay, California 94019, pages 51 and 61.)
"Joshua Greer married Sarah ______ and they lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina until his death in 1796. Children: Joshua, John N., Vinson, Ann, Margaret." (GREER FAMILY HISTORY, by Mrs. Ellen A. Fawcett, North Little Rock Arkansas. This was recieved by Frances Gosney Hoover, 5815 Gladstone Blvd, Kansas City, Missouri 64123-1517 in 1981, who in turn sent it to Ralph Terry in 1995. It appears to be a part of a collection of families, as it appears on pages 78 to 82.)
(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Both of the above lists appear to have been made up from Joshua's will. However, the lists contain only two of the same named children. I have not seen the will, so I am not sure which is correct.)
