Aquilla Greer

(August 11, 1799 - Abt January, 1879)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: From previous records I had recorded the birthplaces of the children of Aquilla Greer and Sarah Sayers as Pulaski County, Georgia. On compilation of further records and reflecting on these, it appears that Aquilla and Sarah Greer lived in Greene County, Georgia from birth to death. Therefore, all of their children must have been born in Greern County.)

"Aquilla Greer was born 11 August 1799." (Henry English Bible of Greene County, Georgia. Owner: Miss Pauline Stokely, Pelham, Georgia. Found in GEORGIA BIBLE RECORDS, 1985, compiled by Jeannette Holland Austin, page 376.)

1840 Walton County, Georgia census, Broken Arrow District, page 113: Aquilla GRIER: males: 1 - under 5, 1 - 5 to 10, 1 - 10 to 15, 1 - 15 to 20, 1 - 40 - 50; females: 1 - under 5, 1 - 10 to 15, 1 - 15 to 20, 1 - 40 - 50.

1850 Greene County, Georgia census, page 122, Dwelling/Family #765/765: Aquilla GREER, 53 M, Farmer, Real Value $1450, Ga; Sarah GREER, 46, F, NC; Lucy GREER, 22, F, Ga; Wm GREER, 21, M, Farmer, Ga; John GREER, 18, M, Farmer, Ga; Martha GREER, 16, F, Ga; Adelia GREER, 12, F, Ga; Ebenezer GREER, 10, M, Ga; Neville GREER, 8, M, Ga; David GREER, 4, M, Ga.

1860 Greene County, Georgia census, Woodville Post Office, Dwelling/Family #415/420, taken 9 August 1860: Aquilla GREER, 64, male, Farmer, real estate$1000, personal estate $8000, Ga; Sarah GREER, 54, female, Georgia; Jane GREER, 24, female, Georgia; Ebenezer GREER, 20, male, at school, Georgia; Nevill GREER, 18, male, farm, Georgia; David GREER, 14, male, Georgia.

1870 Greene County, Georgia census, Penfield Post Office, taken 18 June 1870, Dwelling/Family #195/202: Augustus (should have been Aquilla) GREER, 73, male, white, farmer, real estate $1000, personal estate $500, Georgia; Sarah GREER, 65, female, white, keeping house, Georgia; Jane GREER, 30, female, white, Georgia; David GREER, 23, male, white, farm laborer, Georgia. (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Next door at Dwelling/Family #196/203: Julia GREER, 26, female, black, farm laborer, Georgia; Hugh GREER, 5, male, black, Georgia. Two houses from her at Dwelling/Family #198/205 were: Sylvester GREER, 63, male, black, farmer, Georgia; Martha GREER, 40, female, black, keeping house, Georgia; Mahala GREER, 13, female, black, farm laborer, Georgia; David GREER, 11, male, black, farm laborer, Georgia; Levi GREER, 3, male, black, Georgia, Mary GREER, 6, female, black, Georgia; Anna GREER, 1, female, black, Georgia; Cicero GREER, 4, male, black, Georgia; Franklin GREER, 2, male, black, Georgia. -- I wonder if these could have been former slaves of the Greer family, named after the Greer family, or fathered by the Greer family?)

"Aquilla Greer of Greene County, Georgia is listed in the 1865 Amnesty Oaths: dark, grey (hair), blue eyes, 5' 6", age 67, farmer." (MY GREER LINEAGE, 1992, by Mary Lee Barnes, page 112.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: The children of Vinson Greer, Jr. and the birth dates of Aquilla and Sarah were taken from GREER KINSMEN, 1986, by J. B. Bell, page 109. This source shows Vinson Greer, Jr's son, Aquilla, married Sarah Sayers. However, further research and the Henry English Bible records indicate the Aquilla Greer who married Sarah Sayers was the son of William Greer and Delilah Haynes, sister-in-law of Henry English. Therefore, page 109a of GREER KINSMEN probably refers to the Aquilla Greer, son of William Greer, who married Sarah Sayer, and not Aquilla Greer who was the son of Vinson Greer, Jr.)
