Thomas Cantrell

(Abt, 1778 - Bef 1850)

"Thomas Cantrell was born about 1778 in the northern part of Guilford county, North Carolina. His birthplace became Rockingham County in 1785. He accompanied his parents on the move to the old 96th District, South Carolina. The area they settled in became Pendleton District and later Pendleton County. He married 1st Margaret McAdams about 1800. She is the daughter of James McAdams. (NOTE FROM SUE: James McAdams is also an ancestor in my McAdams line through his son, Samuel, Margaret's brother. I am my own 6th cousin. My brother, Ray is a 6th cousin to his wife Norma Sue, as she is also a descendant of James Cantrell.) James and Margaret were recorded in Pendleton District in 1800. Thomas was not located in the 1810 census of South Carolina, but we knnow that he was in Georgia by 1813, as his youngest son was born in that year in Georgia. The family genealogist stated that he fought in the war of 1812, but this researecher has not been able to find a record of such service.

"His was the first of the family to migrate to Georgia as a family unit. In 1820, Thomas was recorded in Capt. Reeds District, Hall County. Their family consisted of seven children, three sons and four daughters. By 1830, Margaret was deceased and Thomas was living with son, Moses in Hall county. He mararied 2nd Elizaberth Duncan 21 June 1832 in Hall county. in 1840. He was recorded in the new county of Lumpkin which had been formed from part of Hall County. He lived next farm to son, James and his family in Capt. Smiths District. His wife was probably a widow, as she was born 1780-1790 and their household encluded a 15-20 year old male and a 3-10 year old female. Thomas may have died in the next ten years as neither he nor his wife was located in the 1850 census. Thomas served in the War of 1812. According to The Cantrell Genealogy Thomas was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina."
