Jesse James Cantrell

"Jesse James Cantrell, son of James, was born in 1794 in the old 96th District, later Pendleton District, South Carolina. Here he grew to manhood and married Mary Jane_____ about 1818. She was born in 1800 in SC of North Carolina parents.

"In 1820, they were recorded on page 212 of the Pendleton District Census. At that time they were the parents of one daughter. In the 1820's Jesse moved his young family to Georgia and in 1827, they lived in DeKalb Co., GA.. When the Cherokee Land Lottery was held on 12 March 1827, he was one of the fortunate drawers on the 5th day. Jesse was No. 158 and he drew land in the 10th District, Section 5, Carroll Co., GA. They occupied the land soon thereafter and in 1830, they were recorded on page 216 of the Carroll Co. census. A 60-70 year old female was listed with them. In 1840, they were still living in the 714th District, Carroll Co.. One son, who would have been about 15 years old was missing. In 1850, Jesse and most of his family were recorded in the 11th District, Carroll Co.. His land was valued at $500.00. Another son, who would have been about eleven years old was missinfg. The eldest daughter was a widow with two children and she was living with them.

"Haralson Co. was formed in 1856 from part of Carrol Co.. Jesse's land lay in the new county. In 1860, he was listed as James and he and Mary and their youngest child was recorded in district #3 P.O. Repose, Haralson County. He was listed as being blind. His farma was valued at $200.00 and he had personal property valued at $700.00. Two of the sons were farming nearby. One son was farming in Carroll County. One was in Georga and one had made the migration to Texas. One son was also in Florida. By 1870, Jesse had retired from farming and he and Mary were recorded in the home of son, William in the 1225th GM District, P.O. Tallapoosa, in Haralson Co.. He was again listed as blind. They are probably buried in the western part of Haralson County, Georgia.
