Individual Details

William Greer

(January 29, 1748 - September 24, 1812)

"William Greer fought at Kings Mountain and took the Oath of Allegience in Henry County, Virginia September 13, 1777 at age 29." (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol 9, page 140.)

"William Greer received 287 1/2 acres in Washington County, Georgia for his services." (Georgia Revolutionary Records by Lucian Lamar Knight, 1920.)

"This is probably the William Greer who witnessed the will of Henry Haynes in 1784 in Bedford County, Virginia. He had land on the Oconee River in 1784 in Greene County, Georgia. He died 24 September 1812 in Greene County, Georgia." (MY GREER LINEAGE, by Mary Lee Barnes, 1992.)

Marriages and some birth dates from the Parmenas Haynes Family Bible from Mrs. Morgan Roby Redwine of Athens, Georgia, who sent it in November 1942 to Robert M. Torrence. This information has been also recorded in the research notes of L. L. McNees (deceased); MISSISSIPPI REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIERS, pages 130 - 131; by Mrs. Ida C. Seale of Florida; and GREER KINSMEN by J. B. Bell.

Records from Mabel Greer McLeod to Ellen Rees show that William Greer died in Ogelthorpe County, Georgia on 24 September 1812 and was buried there on 27 September 1812. It also shows that he married first to Jane or Jean Greer in 1773 at Bedford County, Virginia, as does the Haynes Bible. (NOTE FROM RALH TERRY: Information from ROYAL HERITAGE OF THE GREERS by Carolyn Beal, page 188A give William Greer died 24 September 1812, and his wife, dying in Neshoba County, Mississippi. This is highly improbable, as what is now Neshoba County, Mississippi was not created until 1830 from part of the Chocktaw Cession of 1830. In other words, it was still Indian Land and white settlers were pretty much kept out.)

Mabel (Greer) McLeod supplied the birth, death and marriage deaths, as well as spouses on the family and descendants of William and Jean (or Jane) Greer to Robert M. Torrence, December 2, 1945 (and to Ellen Greer Rees in 1946) from the Henry and Mary Greer Bible records and adding much information to this branch. At that time Mabel was living at 509 Walnut Street, Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
