"James Cantrell was born in 1832 in Tennessee. He moved to Missouri with his parents. James bought land in Lawrence County, Missouri, January 15, 1855. He enlisted with his brothers, Benjamin and George, in the Lawrence County Home Guard, Vols. Col. "D" at Mt. Vernon, Missouri, May 15, 1861. The Home Guard unit was disbanded August 10, 1861.
