"Nancy Ann Paterson was not Indian. I believe that my father said she had red hair and probably blue eyes, as I and my father had. I never met any of my father's family. I wonder if he may have been shunned after he married my mother, Viola Cornelia Miller, a divorcee. My three sisters Cleta Ann (b. 1918), Calvean (b. 12920), Lessie (Tessie?) May (b. 1929) only have one child among them, Patsy (b. 1942 in El Paso), who now lives in Oregon. Patsy's father was Chester Turner. He and Cleta were divorce about 1996.
"I'm sadded by Delia's death, as she was my nearest Howell relative. When I met her in about 1981, I was certain she looked much like my oldest sister Cleta. Cleta was a blue eyed blond when young. By the way, Delia remembered Nancy Paterson, saying that she was well educated (private schools). There hasn't been much of a tradition of education on the Howell side. I am apparently one of the few with college degrees (B. S. Chemical Engineering, Purdue University, 1948, some graduate studies)." (Letter from Garry Howell (Samuel G.
