John is listed as a tithable in his father's family in 1789 which indicates that he was born about 1769. John is listed with his brother, Jesse, in the 1800 Tax List for Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. (Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol 62, No. 1, January 1954, p. 124).

On 24 February 1806, John was appointed guardian of his sister Susan (Susannah) who was orphaned by the death of their father. Bond was set at $200 with Nathan Hitt. also a brother of Susan, was security: JP: William Brown, Richard Rixey, Jr., James Pickett, and John P. Smith.

On 17 December 1821, the land of John Hitt dec'd was divided among his heirs as follows: 56 acres to Mrs. Sinai Hitt, her 1/3 dower; and the remainder divided among his children: Dudley Hitt, Stephen (Steptoe) Hitt, Morgan Hitt (husband of daughter Elizabeth), John Hitt, Ambrose Hitt, and David Crule (David Creel husband of daughter Adelia/Delilah).
