James William Hitt

(October 3, 1780 - October 19, 1853)

James Hitt is listed as a tithable in his father's family in 1791 which indicates that he was born about 1774/1775. He moved to Culpeper County before 1810 and lived there until his death. The Journal of the Society of Germanna Colonies (Vol. I, No. 2, p. 36) discusses the James Hitt family and states that James was descended from John Hitt, and that he married Catherine Morrison and had the following children: Sandy Hitt who married Miss Stewart; Jack Hitt who never married; Ludwell Hitt who married Kitty Grimsley; Robert Hitt who married Judy Hitt; Elzy Hitt who married Lucy Ann Heflin; Nettie Hitt who married William Hanback; Nancy Hitt who married Jack Kensie; Jane Hitt who married William Embry; and Catherine Hitt who married Garnett Mozingo.

In 1810, Samuel Clagett and Amy his wife, of Fauquier County deed to James Hitt 117 acres of land in Culpeper County, Virginia; deed was witnessed by Jesse Hitt, Stephen Hitt, and Elijah Hitt. (Deed Book EE, October 9, 1810, p. 42). On 29 August 1831, for $50, James Hitt deeded 11 acres of land in Culpeper County, adjacent to George Ficklin and Martin Tompkins, to Ludwell Hitt his son. (Culpeper County, Virginia Deed Book ZZ, 29 August 1832, p. 153).

1850 Rappahannock County, Virginia census: James W. Hitt age 70, farmer; wife Malinda age 58; dau. Nancy age 40; dau. Catherine age 26; all born in Virginia.

The will of James Hitt was written 12 October 1853 and proven on 14 November 1853. James' will specifies the following: To wife Malinda 1/3 of land, East Side of Castle Mountain with the house. To daughters Nancy and Catherine Hitt the other 2/3 of this land. To daughter Jane, wife of William Embrey, Negro boy Charles. To son Alexander $1, his full portion having been advanced some years ago. Residue of estate to be sold, one half of the proceeds to wife Malinda, one half t these children, Viz. Ludwell Hitt, Nelly Handback, Robert Hitt, John Hitt, Nancy Hitt, Catherine Hitt, Elzey Hitt and Jane Embrey. Executor: Friend Benjamin Lillard.
