Individual Details
Nathan Ellington Greer Sr.
(July 31, 1898 - September 20, 1988)
"Nathan E. Greer lived at Scottsburg, Indiana." (Information from Dr. E. M. Thompson, 1960, from Lois Temple.)
"Nathan Ellington Greear, Sr. was a bookeeper, coal mine owner, and in real estate. They said Pepa took after his mother and grandaddy Fugate. But he felt more like a Greear than a Fugate. Pepa: I had 76 first cousins down there. Pepa got reprimanded for chewing tobacco on the campus of Berea College when he was a student there at 16 yrs.old. He waited tables for a nickle a week in the lunch room at Berea. He was a bookeeper for the railroad, and then the Blue Diamond Coal Mine. Pepa was phenomenal with "figures". He could add a long column of 4 digit figures in about 5 seconds! He bought his own Coal Mining Company in Bonnie Blue, Va. His assets amounted to $250,000+, but it was wiped out during the depression. He showed up in Scott Co., Ind with only $5,000 in his pocket and started over. He owned a furniture store in Austin, Ind., sold real estate, cars, ran for mayor, and was on numerous local government boards." (From taped interview with Nathan Ellington Greear, Sr. by Mary South.)
