Individual Details
Elizabeth Riley
(June 9, 1903 - December 14, 1983)
"I was born at 3 am. I was a bad little girl. I got a whipping many times when I shouldn't have. I got in trouble alot for trying to defend my brothers." (From taped interview with Elizabeth (Riley) Greear via Mary South.)
"Elizabeth left home at 10 years. She went to boarding school (Witherspoon College) in Buckhorn, Kentucky until she finished high school then went to Hazard, Kentucky to finish up nursing. She had a room at the president of the boarding school's home (Dr. Murdock), because she was too young to live in the dormitory. She loved it there. In Hazard she lived with Dr. A. M. Gross, a cousin, and his wife while she finished up nursing school. He was county judge and owned the hospital. It was there that she met Nathan Greear and got married in Dr. Gross' living room at the age of 17." (Mary South.)
