Martha Alice (or Mattie) Walling was the oldest daughter of James Walling, Jr. and Leurena Latham. She was probably born in Henderson Co., Tex. (near Brownsboro) and soon afterward moved with the rest of her family to Coryell Co. near Ft. Gates (or now Gatesville). This family is shown on the 1870 Census of Coryell Co., Tex. The family is also shown on the Coryell Co. tax lists from 1866 through 1878, but has not been located as yet on any 1880 Census. They are found again on the tax lists of Limestone Co. beginning in 1881. Information supplied by Cora Belle (Walling) Britton (Martha Alice's sister) to Maudie Walling in a sworn affidavit strongly supports the conclusion that Martha Alice was the daughter of James Walling, Jr.
