James N. Walling Jr.

(October, 1833 - 1914)

James Walling, Jr. was the seventh child and second son born to James Walling, Sr. and Martha Hamlin. He was born in Tennessee in Oct. 1833, and probably in Fayette County. The family moved between Tennessee and Mississippi (Pike Co.) before finally moving to Texas in 1836. They are shown on the First Census of the Republic of Texas taken about 1836 and are listed on the tax rolls of Nacogdoches Co., TX (which was quite large in those days) from 1837 through 1846. In 1848, the James Walling family is shown on the tax rolls of Cherokee Co., TX (which was created from Nacogdoches Co. in 1846) where the original family settlement was likely located. In 1850, this family is shown on the Cherokee Co., TX Census (Fam. # 716) living quite close to the Mastin Latham family (Fam. # 711). According to the tax rolls, the Walling family remained in Cherokee Co. until 1857 when they moved to Henderson Co., TX. The facts that (1) James, Jr. is listed in the same household as James Walling, Sr. and (2) was said to be his son in a sworn affidavit given by his daughter Cora Belle (Walling) Britton to Maudie Walling, strongly supports the conclusion that James Walling, Jr. was the son of James Walling, Sr.

The Wallings and Lathams were no doubt very close families and James Walling, Jr. and Leurana Latham grew up together in Cherokee Co. After the Latham family moved to Coryell Co. in 1856, James followed Rena there, and on 27 Aug. 1859, they were married. They moved to Henderson Co., TX (Brownsboro P.O., Beat #2, Fam. #298) and are shown on the 1860 Census of that county. James Walling, Jr. is first shown on the tax rolls of Henderson Co. in 1860 and in 1861 paid taxes on 860 acres of land (two different tracts) originally granted to H. L. Thompson in Limestone Co., TX and Samuel Brimberry in Smith Co.

James Walling, Jr. fought in the Civil War and was in Company I, McCord's Cavalry Regiment. He served on the Texas frontier and was in service for 4 years. According to A. S. Latham's description of him in his Confederate Pension Application filed in 1899 in Erath Co., TX, James Walling weighed about 160 pounds, stood about 5 feet 11 inches tall and had a dark complexion with brown eyes. Latham also stated that he enlisted with Walling in Co. I, Col. James Norris' Regiment in Hamilton Co., TX in the winter of 1861-62 and that they served throughout the War together.

Following the Civil War, the James Walling family moved to Coryell Co. about 1866 and is shown on the tax rolls of that county from 1866 through 1880. They are also shown on the 1870 Census of Coryell Co. (Gatesville P.O., Prect. #4, Fam. #94-94). James Walling, Jr. had two original grants of land (P-340 and P-3390) about 15 miles south-southeast of Gatesville lying south of Cow House Creek and next to the grant of his mother-in-law Sarah Latham (3-1761). The family has not yet been located on the 1880 Census. In 1881, James Walling appears on the tax rolls of Limestone Co. and remains there until after 1890. It is not known at this time when his wife Rena died. He probably moved to Erath Co. about 1891-92 and probably married Mrs. Helen E. Teeter there on 28 June 1893 (from marriage records of that county). On 21 July 1899, James was living in Erath Co. at Selden according to his Confederate Pension Application. At that time, he listed his physical condition as being very bad with some paralysis and this condition was supported by a doctor's statement. He claimed to be indigent and destitute of property except for one horse worth about $20 and clothing. He also claimed to have lived in Erath Co. from 1891 to 1899. He is shown along with his son George Riley and several grandchildren on the 1900 Census of Erath Co. (Prect. #4, Fam. #32-36). He is also shown on the 1910 Census of Bosque Co., TX (Just. Prect. #8, Clifton City, 19 Apr. 1910, Fam. #50-52) living with his daughter Cora Britton and her children. According to other Walling researchers, James Walling, Jr. died in 1914 although no record of his death has yet been found. It is quite likely, however, that he died in Bosque Co. and was buried in the Walling Cemetery originally located near the Brazos River in Bosque Co. but relocated near Whitney in Hill Co., TX when Lake Whitney was constructed.
