Individual Details

James Walling

(1795 - August, 1867)

James Walling, Sr. was the second child born to John Walling and Anna Chisum. According to accounts by his brother T. J. Walling given in 1875, James was born in Barren Co., Kentucky in 1795. The John Walling family may have moved to Ohio for a short time before returning to Kentucky and finally settling in White Co., Tennessee about 1810. James Walling was probably married about 1817 since his oldest daughter Mary (Polly) was born about 1818 in Mississippi according to census records. No record of this marriage or identity of his first wife has yet been found. The fact that James Walling, Sr. was the son of John Walling and Anna Chisum has been established by John Walling's will and his brother Thomas J. Walling's account of his families history given in 1875.

James Walling and Martha Hamlin were married in Pike Co., Miss. in 1820 (according to other Walling researchers) and are shown on the 1820 Census of that county. They apparently had 3 children in Mississippi before moving to Tennessee sometime before 1831. This family has not yet been located on the 1830 Census, however. They returned to MS for a short time before moving to Texas in 1836.

James Walling is shown on the First Census of the Republic of Texas and is also listed on the tax rolls of Nacogdoches Co., Tex. (which included much of East Texas in those days) from 1837 through 1846. Between 1837 and 1840, James and his son Vance helped James' father John Walling run a grist mill near Millville in what is now Rusk Co., TX. James Walling apparently had a strong interest in acquiring land, and in 1846 paid taxes on the following land holdings:

1302 acres - Samuel Bell grant - Henderson Co. 736 " - Gillington Chisum " - Smith 320 " - Lorner Williams " - 782 " - Jacob Lewis " - 54 " - C. M. Bell " -

In 1848, James Walling is shown on the tax rolls of Cherokee Co., Tex. and remains there until 1857. During this time he paid taxes on 320 acres of land on Caney Creek near the village of Van Zandt (J.T. Rail grant) and 640 acres of land near the village of Smith in Nacogdoches Co. (John Walling grant). He and his family (with wife Martha) are shown on the 1850 Census of Cherokee Co., Tex. ( Fam. #716-716). James Walling appears on the tax rolls of Henderson Co., Tex. from 1857 through 1864. During this time he paid taxes on 320 acres of land in the southwest corner of the town of Athens (Felix Lennox grant) and 122 1/2 acres of land on Caney Creek also in Athens (Samuel A. Cooper grant). He is shown on the 1860 Census of Henderson Co. (Brownsborough P.O., Beat #2, Fam. #298) with his last wife Emaline and living next to his son James, Jr. His wife Martha must have died sometime between when the 1850 Census was taken and 13 Dec. 1854 when James married Emaline Carter in Cherokee Co. According to Thomas J. Walling's account, James Walling died in Milville, Rusk Co. in Aug. 1867. The probate records of his estate following his death have been taken from the Rusk County Clerk's office and it is not certain where he was buried.
