George Washington Hendrix

(October 20, 1862 - October 11, 1930)

1900 Limestone County, Texas census. Also living in the household was John Hendrix, a nephew, born February 1880.

George Washington Hendrix was the seventh of eight children born to Henry L. Hendrix and Mary Edna McGee. George was almost certainly born in or near the long-deserted town of Springfield, Tex. and grew up there. Springfield , located only about 5 miles north of the famous Ft. Parker on the banks of the Navasota River, was the first county seat of Limestone Co. When the railroad company decided to bypass Springfield in favor of Groesbeck, the county seat was moved south about 1875. It is said that the Hendrix family helped transfer the county records to Groesbeck by covered wagon and it is likely that George at age 13 was along for the ride. It is believed that the family settled in the southern part of Limestone Co. near Thornton and in 1874-76, H. L. Hendrix is shown on the tax list in Precinct 5 of that county. The family has not been located on an 1870 Census but it is believed that they were living in Limestone Co. at that time. On the 1880 Census , George (then 19) is shown living with his brother-in-law's family, Tom and Nancy Kilpatrick (Fam. #418-434, Prect. 5 , Kosse P. O., 23 June 1880). George was possibly married first to Mary Lopes on 29 Dec. 1881. A record of this marriage exists in Limestone Co., but it is uncertain that the G. W. Hendrix mentioned is the one of interest.

George W. Hendrix and Martha A. Walling were married on 25 Jan. 1882 (Vol. B, p.594 of Limestone Co. Marriage Records). This marriage was performed by Rev. David J. Tidwell who also performed his father Henry's marriage 35 years earlier in Winston Co., Miss. The record states that G. W. Hendrix was 20 years old and that M. A. Walling was 17 years old at the time of marriage and that W. A. Walling, the bride's brother, swore that his parents had given consent to the marriage. It is believed that they lived in the Thornton area (per land deed from H.L. Hendrix to G.W. Hendrix) from about the time of their marriage until Martha's death in 1899. She is buried beneath a very large tombstone in the old Tidwell family cemetery just west of Thornton (on land still owned by Kilpatrick descendants) alongside 5 small children.

After Martha's death, George apparently elected to try farming a little longer in the Thornton area. In need of a woman to help raise his 6 small children, he married Dora Edwards on 25 Apr. 1900 (Vol. H., p.348 of Limestone Co. Marriage Records). This family is shown on the 1900 Census of Limestone Co.(Fam. #74-74, Thornton, Prect. 8). George gave up farming and moved to Mart, Tex. about 1904 where he became involved in a number of business activities including a grocery store, an ice cream and oyster parlor, a cotton yard and the City Dray Line. The family is shown on the 1910 Census of Limestone Co. (Fam. # 215-216, Mart, Prect. 2) living on Cowan St. He earned most of his money by hauling cotton, moving people from house to house and transporting all types of goods in and around Mart. He also ran a "cab service" using horse and carriage and would take passengers from the train station to their destination. During this time George was a steward in the Methodist Church in Mart and was an active member.

The family moved to Waco about 1918 and George and his son-in-law E. P. Greer bought the K-T (King's Trail) Texaco gasoline station there. Soon after moving to Waco, George married Delia ? and they lived at 704 Elm St. in Waco until his death in 1930. He was a member of the Wesley Methodist Church and the Odd Fellows in Waco at the time of his death. George was very good looking and had a reputation as a ladies man throughout his life. He is buried in an unmarked grave at the Tidwell Cem. beside his wife Martha Alice.
