Guy Claude Hendrix

(December 8, 1882 - June 25, 1941)

Guy Claude Hendrix was the oldest child of George Washington Hendrix and Martha Alice Walling. He was born near the community of Thornton in the southern part of Limestone Co., Tex. on 8 Dec. 1882. He grew up in the Thornton area and is shown on the 1900 Census of Limestone Co. (Fam.#74-74, Thornton, Prect. 8) with the rest of his family. The 1900 Census of McLennan Co., Tex. shows that he is the son of George W. Hendrix. His death certificate (information supplied by his wife Mary) strongly supports the conclusion that his mother was Martha Alice (Walling) Hendrix. The family moved to Mart, Tex. about 1905 following the death of Guy's mother in 1899.

Guy and Mary met at the Opera House/Theater in Mart where Guy's sister Grace played the organ. They were married on 17 May 1906 in Mart, Tex. The family is shown on the 1910 Census of McLennan Co. (Fam.# 305-326, Mart, Prect. 2) living on North Carpenter Street. During this period of time, Guy helped his father George with his ice cream and oyster parlor in Mart and he also delivered ice in that town. They lived in Mart until about 1915 when they moved to a 100 acre farm given to them by Mary's father just west of Horn Hill. Farming did not prove successful for them and three years later they moved back to Mart. In the summer of 1919, the family moved to east Waco where Guy's father George had bought the K-T (King's Trail) gasoline station at the corner of Peach and Elm Streets. Guy eventually took over the ownership of this station. Following A. J. Oliver's death in 1922, they moved back to the farm for a short time, but soon afterward returned to Waco.

The family moved to Ft. Worth in the fall of 1925, but then returned to Waco before the end of the year because Guy was in bad health. The family returned to Ft. Worth in 1928 and lived on Jefferson St. on the south side of the city before moving to the east side (Meadowbrook Dr. and Oakland Blvd.) where Guy and his sons Guy, Jr. and Jack continued to drive truck routes with Dr. Pepper Co. They later moved to 2937 Wilkinson on the east side of Ft. Worth where they lived until Guy died in 1941. He was a member of the Meadowbrook Methodist Church and the Polytechnic Masonic Lodge #925. He is buried in the Rose Hill Cem. on the east side of Ft. Worth.
