Jane Paul

(Abt 1760 - 27 Jun 1847)

Jane went out to India in the ship "Halsewell", which was the same ship in which her brother-in-law to be, Charles Bickford Templer, was later wrecked and drowned off the Dorset coast some 5 years later.

Jane Paul (1761-1847) was the daughter of Henry Paul of West Monkton, Somerset and married George Templer(1755-1819) in 1781, an East India Company Civil Servant and "Contractor for Elephants" who made a considerable fortune in Calcutta and who founded the London & Middlesex Bank. She bore him three sons and a daughter. By 1788, the family had moved from India to the manor of Shapwick, near Street in Somerset and George subsequently became MP for Honiton (1790-1796) but he never made a speech. He returned to India in 1817 and died of the fever. Jane Templer returned to Britain and died at Shute near Exeter in 1847, aged 86. She was noted for her beauty, even in old age.
