Marion Joseph Kates was born at Comstock, Nebraska, September 18, 1903, a son of William and Ida Kates. Early in childhood his family moved to Iowa and Marion was a 1922 graduate of the Glenwood, Iowa, High School. He attended Tabor College having been granted a "football scholarship." About this time in his life he moved into the Carson community; he met Helen Putnam here and on August 14, 1933 they were married. 

Marion was a member of the Carson United Methodist Church, a member and Past Master of Coral Lodge 430 A. F. & A. M. and served as Worthy Patron of the Carson Chapter No. 92 Order of the Eastern Star. 

Survivors include his wife, Helen; two sons, Kenneth of Council Bluffs and Richard of Oakland; four sisters, Mrs. James Larsen of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Bessie Doan and Mrs. Frances Whyte of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Mrs. Wilbur Benscoter of Glenwood; one brother, John of West Des Moines and five grandchildren.
