William M. Kates was born December 28, 1871, at Auglaize, Ohio. He passed away at his home Wednesday evening, April 22, 1931.
His parents with their family moved into the neighborhood of Randolph, Iowa, in 1880. Here Mr. Kates grew to manhood and on June 4, 1893, was married to Miss Ida Marshall. Eight children were born to this union, five girls and three boys, all of whom are living. They are Mrs. Lola Briggs, Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Bessie Doan, Grand Island, Nebraska; Mrs. Della Larson, Council Bluffs; John, Atlantic, Iowa; Mrs. Fern Benscoter, Marion, James and Esther of Glenwood.
There are 10 grandchildren. Two brothers, George and Joseph Kates, are still living, as well as one sister, Mrs. Jennie Ducker of New Ramer, Colorado.
Mr. Kates was converted during the Gunder meetings some years ago, and united with the Methodist church. He became a very active member of the Men's Gospel team. This team visited many communities, helping in evangelistic work, by telling the story of Christ's pardoning grace.
For many years Mr. Kates had been a great sufferer, through which he had been very patient.
Besides his faithful wife and children there are many friends and neighbors who mourn the departure of Wm. Kates.
Funeral services were held in the Raynor chapel Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. John F. Arnold of the Methodist church.
Music for the services was furnished by Mrs. Will McCoy, Mrs. George Masters, Harry Hamilton and S. M. Criswell. The flower ladies were Mrs. Robert Davis and Mrs. Ferrell Connell; pallbearers were William Irby, Lester Lambert, Elmer James, George Radford, Cy Morford and Geo. Edmonds. The body was laid to rest in the Glenwood cemetery.
