Alton Alvin Martin, 77, of Southside died Friday, September 12, 2014, at his home.
Born December 10, 1936, in Melrose, Arkansas, he was the son of Alva Charles Martin and Doris Olgie Tuttle Martin.
He served four years in the U.S. Navy and three years in the U. S. Merchants Marines. He worked at GenCorp of Batesville as a mixer-operator for thirty years. He enjoyed gardening vegetables, fishing on the White River and local area ponds, squirrel hunting, bowling, watching football, baseball, basketball and spending time outdoors. He and his wife, over the years, fostered over fifty-six children. He was a member of Allen Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Faye Newberry Martin of Southside; two sons, Allen Craig Martin of Southside and James Hicks of Floral; three daughters, Robin Dunard of Desha, Edith Ann Martin of Southside, and Frances Lee Bukhari of Knoxville, Tennessee; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Douglas Lee Martin of Kokomo, Indiana and Lonnie Dean Martin of Anderson, Indiana and four sisters, Nola Pyle of Noblesville, Indiana, Atha Grooms of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Vada Thompson of Locust Grove and Lola Solida of Bradford; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clay Martin; and three sisters, Ava Mawhiney, Alma Jones and Allie Ivy.
Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Egner Cemetery with Bro. Tim Landers officiating. Arrangements are by Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.
Pallbearers will be Danny Smith, John Smith, Gerry Mohlke, Allen Martin Jr., Edith Ann Martin and James Hicks.
Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Byrd, Darryl Thompson, Mike Elwood and David Branscum.
There will be no visitation.
