Individual Details
Ella D. Ivory
(13 May 1862 - 8 Dec 1937)
Source: Sharon Patchet, Ella's great granddaughter. "I am attaching newspaper information regarding Ella. The newspaper is incorrect, as she got married Nov 18, 1878, 7 1/2 months before her first child was born. I have the marriage booklet." "Ella was the center of the family that everyone gravitated to. Miles was a hard headed Dutchman, but a well respected gentleman. He served as mayor of Sackets Harbor for over 20 years.
The extended family would gather in Sackets harbor in the summer. Many families there were involved in Revolutionary War reenactments including the VanAlstynes. Sharon has pictures of the family dressed in colonial clothing.
According to Lawrence VanAlstyne Ella was a very large woman. In the last few years of her life she needed help in and out of bed. She had a stool next to her bed to help her. She had inherited her size from her Heath grandmother. She also suffered from diabetes.
Ella had a wonderful flower garden her back yard at Sackets Harbor. Her daughter Jeanette transplanted some of the flowers into her own garden. Ella's bleeding hearts survive in her great-grandaughter Sharon's garden as well as some irises that may also have originated in the Sacket's Harbor garden. Ella had a summer kitchen outsideand a winter kitchen indoors. She had numerous antiques, many of them from the old Heath home.
