Rufus Ivory

"Rufus Ivory was born in the township of Elba, July 20, 1845 and has always lived on the homestead. On the death of his father, John Ivory, he became possessed of a part of the old farm which he still retains. Has served his township in the capacity of highway comissioner two years, and is the present (1883) incumbent. He was married March 8, 1866 to Miss Sarah J. Wilders. They have had five children, three of whom are living. In the year 1882 Rufus was one of the school inspectors for the town of Hadley."
In 1880 Rufus, Sarah, and their three children, William, Martha, and Sarah lived on the family farm. The two older children attended school. Eight year old Sarah did not.
In 1900 Rufus, age 57 Sarah, age 56, their daughter, Alissa [Una Lou] born Oct. 1880, and his brother Frank, age 59 lived on the family farm. His brother Franklin lived with him, as well as a servant, Sam William. Next door to them was Elery Ivory. Rufus IVORY and Elery E. IVORY are 1st cousins. Their common ancestors are John IVORY and Betsey PAGE.
Pioneer Families and History of Lapeer County by J. Dee Ellis states that Rufus bought the private bank of Travis and Hagle some time after 1902 and ran it until his death.
