Individual Details
Allie Carrie Ford
(1 Feb 1902 - 6 Apr 2000)
Allie Carrie Ford was the daughter of Minnie Elizabeth Bookwalter & Charles Marion Ford. She was born on the family farm and got her early education in the local country schools. After her father died in 1919, at the age of 17, alone, she boarded a train to Sacramento, California, to help assist her sister & family. While she was out west, her mother and brothers sold their Missouri farm and moved to Gillette, Wyoming, so Allie did not get to return to her "beloved" home, friends & social life.
While in Wyoming, she helped her brothers with their Feed and Sale Barn business. On Sundays, she and her new friends would go horseback riding over the prairie. One particular Sunday, an ex-serviceman asked if he could take her picture. This turned out to be her future husband, Billie Hoye. The couple were wed Nov. 14, 1922 in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho and from there began their life together in Omaha, NE.
Two beautiful daughters came from this union. The young couple struggled during the "Crash of 29." To make ends meet, Allie went to work for J.C. Pennys, making $1.00 a day.
In 1944, Billie was accidentally shot and killed during a hunting accident, by a good friend of the family.
Now being alone, Allie took in boarders and went to work for the Spencer Garment Foundation Company as a sales manager. She worked hard and subsequently rose to the position of regional manager. In 1951, needing and wanting a change, she moved to Elkorn, Wisconsin to become co-owner of a 42 room hotel, "The Lorraine". While there, her health began to fail and had to give up this job.
She second married Everett Gantz, June 6, 1952.....ironically, Everett's son was the one who accidentally shot Billie Hoye. Allie & Everett made their home in Palo Alto, California. She went back to work for the Spencer Company and stayed with them until 1958. Everett passed away in 1960. Alone again, Allie decided to "see the world" and traveled extensively in the Orient.
She lived with her daughter in Woodland Hills, California for a time, and then had a little house of her own built.
In 1966, she boarded the "Caronia" and set sail on a Meditteranean cruise, where she found an old acquaintance, William Bartheld, also on the cruise. Bill & Allie were married Oct. 1, 1966 and made their home in Santa Barbara, California. Bill passed away in 1982, so Allie was once again alone. She spent her remaining years living with her daughters in California.
This little red-headed girl from Missouri lived, worked, and succeeded, no matter what the obstacles.
