Ellen Jane "Dottie" Ford

(18 Mar 1889 - 28 Dec 1959)

"Dottie" was the first child born to Charles & Minerva Bookwalter Ford. She was born in Kansas, but the family moved to Missouri when she was about 6 years old and she attended the local country schools.
She married Vernon Long in Kansas City and made that their first home. They later moved to Oregon. Dottie became very ill with Typhoid Fever in 1915 and was not expected to live, but she did eventually recover, however, she was always sickly from then on.
They bought a chicken ranch in Stockton, California and had about 2000 leghorns. At this time, a very bad flu epidemic broke out in the country, Dottie, Vernon and their two sons were all very ill, but did recover. The family always seemed to be sick while in California, but when visiting relatives in Washington, the health of the family seemed to improve.
Dottie had jet black hair and was about 5ft. tall with a slight build of about 100lbs. She was a very loving, caring person, but got her feelings hurt very easily. She was strict with her children, but very affectionate. She liked to laugh and enjoyed company and had many friends. She was good to help when anybody was sick and loved helping the doctors when babies were born. She enjoyed sewing and made many quilts and comforters. She continued to live in Spokane after Vernon's death, and after the war, she made her home with her son Leland.

The above passage was a personal recollection from daughter Cleone Wigen in 2005.
