Obituary
Hymenus R. Ivory was born March 31, 1826 in Ridgefield, Huron County, Ohio. He was one of a large family. While the children were small their father died, leaving the family in straitened circumstances. In spite of the disadvantages of childhood and early manhood he secured a liberal education. While at school, he met and married Ann Wilson Nov. 22, 1849 at Elira, Ohio. They settled at Marshal, Michigan where he lived until 1864. In August of that year, they came to Tabor where he has since resided. By this union were born six children, five of whom are living. His wife died Nov. 12, 1868. November 30, 1869 he was married to Mary Smith. By this union were born four children, all of whom are living. In early manhood, he united with the Baptist Church, and was for many years active in church work. Later he united with the Congregational church of Tabor, of which he was a member until his death which took place Aug. 3, 1900. For several years he had been in failing health, and while his last illness was short his demise was not unexpected. He passed away peacefully and with a calm conviction that all was well. For many years he was actively engaged as a carpenter and builder, and many substantial monuments remain to perpetuate his memory. In his work, as in everything else, he was honest and conscientious. As a citizen he was public spirited and energetic. He held many positions of trust and honor, and discharged every duty intelligently and faithfully. In this community where he resided for so many years he was universally respected for those qualities of head and heart which made him a useful member of society. He was domestic in his tastes and was devoted to his home and family. He was an affectionate husband and father, an earnest and consistent Christian, a public spirited citizen, and his death will be universally mourned. His surviving widow and children have the sympathy of all."
