Obituary
December 15, 2000, The Washington PostWilliam Calomiris, 80, a businessman and past president of the Washington Board of Trade who was active in area civic and charitable work since the 1940s, died of cancer Dec. 13 at Georgetown University Hospital. He lived in Washington.
In 1940, he founded the William Calomiris Investment Corp., a Washington real estate brokerage, development, investment and management company. He had been involved in both residential and commercial ventures in the area. He remained the company's board chairman and chief executive officer until his death.
In addition to his real estate interests, Mr. Calomiris had been a banker, serving as director of both Lincoln National Bank and Jefferson Federal Savings & Loan, and as an advisory director of Riggs National Bank. He also had been board chairman of Washington Federal Savings Bank before its 1996 sale to First Maryland Bankcorp. After that, he helped create Greater Atlantic Bank.
Mr. Calomiris, who had been named the board of trade's Man of the Year in 1964, served as its president in 1968. That was the year parts of the city burned in riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Calomiris helped spearhead efforts to rebuild the city's riot corridor, to help establish special summer programs for poor inner-city youths and to help create housing for low- and middle-income people.
He was involved in a variety of endeavors to help the city and its less fortunate citizens. He chaired the old United Givers Fund in Washington in 1962. Under his leadership, the organization, a forerunner of the United Way, met its fundraising campaign goal for perhaps the first time in history.
In 1964, he helped found HEROES (Honor Every Responsible Officer's Eternal Sacrifice), which raises funds for the families of Washington area law enforcement officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty. Mr. Calomiris served as a HEROES senior vice president and as chairman of its scholarship committee.
From 1978 to 1982, he was chairman of the National Capital YMCA management committee, and he also served on the organization's board of directors. The YMCA Calomiris Center was named in his honor. His other honors included his 1998 induction into the Washington Business Hall of Fame.
Mr. Calomiris, an archon in the Greek Orthodox Church, had served as board of trustees president of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
He also had been a supporter of the D.C. Youth Leader Corps.
Mr. Calomiris was born in Washington to Greek immigrant parents and grew up in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. He dropped out of Eastern High School after the death of his father, to help support his mother and four siblings. He worked first as a baker's apprentice at Continental Bakers in Washington. While still a teenager, he went in the "rooming house business." He secured a loan to buy a dilapidated building, refurbished and remodeled it, and then rented out rooms by the week.
He served with the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II, becoming one of the first Americans to enter Nagasaki not long after the city was destroyed by an atomic bomb. After the war, he returned to Washington and expanded his real estate businesses. He remodeled and sold buildings. Later, taking on partners, he pioneered the construction of new apartment buildings for Washington's middle-income blacks.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary, of Washington; two sons, Charles, of Scarsdale, N.Y., and George, of Washington; two daughters, Katherine Tompros and Jenifer Calomiris, a brother, Peter, and a sister, Martina Chapin, all of Washington; and 11 grandchildren.
Washington Times, The (DC) - December 16, 2000
Deceased Name: William Calomiris, 80, past trade panel chief
William Calomiris, 80, a prominent real estate entrepreneur and former president of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, died of cancer Dec. 13 at Georgetown University Medical Center.
Mr. Calomiris was a lifelong resident of the District. He was chairman of the board and chief executive officer of William Calomiris Investment Corp., a real estate brokerage, development and management company he started in 1940. After serving in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II, Mr. Calomiris returned to the District and expanded his real estate business. He remained the top executive at his company until his death.
Mr. Calomiris also was prominent in banking circles. He served as director of Lincoln National Bank and Jefferson Federal Savings and Loan, advisory director to Riggs National Bank, and chairman of the board of Washington Federal Savings Bank. He was instrumental in helping create the Greater Atlantic Bank in 1997.
The son of Greek immigrants, Mr. Calomiris dropped out of Eastern High School to help support the family after his father's death. He first worked as a baker's apprentice at Continental Bakers in the District, then started a rooming house business - renovating an old home and renting out rooms on a weekly basis.
In 1962, Mr. Calomiris became chairman of the United Givers Fund, a precursor to the United Way. Following the 1968 riots in the District, as head of the Board of Trade he led efforts to rebuild the inner city, established summer programs for inner-city youth, and helped develop low- and moderate-income housing in Prince George's County.
In 1964, Mr. Calomiris became a founder of Honor Every Responsible Officer's Eternal Sacrifice, Inc. (HEROES), an organization dedicated to helping families of District firefighters and police officers killed while on duty. He was the organization's senior vice president and chairman, and set up a program to provide college scholarships to the children of slain firefighters and police officers.
Mr. Calomiris was chairman of the National Capital YMCA Committee of Management from 1978 until 1982 when he was named to its board of directors. Because of his financial and leadership contributions to the YMCA, a new center was established in 1994 and named the YMCA Calomiris Center in his honor.
Mr. Calomiris was an avid racquetball player well into his 70s. He also was an active supporter of the D.C. Youth Leader Corps, and an archon of the Greek Orthodox Church. He was a member and president of the board of trustees of the Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
In 1964, Mr. Calomiris was named the Board of Trade's Man of the Year, and in 1998 was inducted into the Washington Business Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary, of Washington; two sons, Charles of Scarsdale, N.Y., and George of the District; two daughters, Katherine Tompros and Jenifer Calomiris; a brother, Peter; and a sister, Martina Chapin, all of the District; and 11 grandchildren.
Services will be held on at 1 p.m. Monday at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 4115 16th St. NW. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in the District.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Calomiris' name to HEROES Inc., 666 11th St. NW, Suite 300, Washington, D.C. 20001.
