Obituary
Washington Post, The (DC) - July 9, 1984Deceased Name: Jennie Calomiris, 87, an area resident since 1918
Jennie Calomiris, 87, an area resident since 1918 who was a founder of the Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Washington, died of cancer July 7 at the home of a daughter, Martina Chapin, in Chevy Chase.
Mrs. Calomiris, who lived in Washington, was a native of Sparta, Greece. She came to this country and settled in New York City in 1913. Two years later, she married George D. Calomiris, and the couple owned and operated a restaurant in Harlem before coming to Washington in 1918.
The death of Mr. Calomiris in 1937 left her with five children and by all accounts a determination to keep her family together. In the late 1930s, she invested her savings in the first real estate venture of her son, William Calomiris, who went on to become president of the Greater Washington Board of Trade.
In addition to her daughter and her son William, of Washington, her survivors include another son, Peter, of Washington; three sisters, Stamata Panagakos of Florida, Antonia Chipouras of Silver Spring, and Georgia Bougadis of Athens, Greece; 13 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Two sons predeceased her.

Alt name
There is no Blahos in Sparta -- the family name is Vlahos; the transliterated spelling would look like a B because that is how a V is pronounced.Endnotes
