"David Mehrten Grandson of Pioneer Hale Tharp -
Exeter area native David N. Mehrten, 86, of Lemonncove, passed awayMonday in a Visalia convalescent hospital.
Mr. Mehrten was the grandson of Hale Tharp, an early Tulare Countypioneer who was the first white man in Sequoia National Park. Tharp'slog cabin and meadow in the park are named after the family.
Mr. Mehrten attended the Kaweah School and also schools in ThreeRivers. He was engaged in cattle ranching on the south fork of theKaweah River.
He was married in 1917 to the former Lavin Hicks. In 1928 they movedto the Horse Creek area, the present site of Kaweah Lake. Later theymoved to the south shore.
Mrs. Mehrten passed away in 1960.
Mr. Mehrten is survived by three sons, David R. and Gordon ofLemoncove, and Lawrence D. of Visalia; two daughters, Mildred Dawsonof Visalia and Bernice Henderson of SanLuis Obispo. He also leaves 11grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (June 17) at the MillerMemorial Chapel in Woodlake. The Rev. David Coleman will officiate.Burial will be in the Woodlake Cemetery."
