Missouri Marriages to 1850
about Dunbar, Martha
Spouse 1: Dunbar, Martha
Spouse 2: Mccoy, Joyn
Marriage Date: 01 Sep 1808
Marriage Location: Missouri
St. Charles County
History of St. Charles, Montgomery and Warrent Counties Missouri on page 103 lists names of pioneers of the county. In Cuivre Twp. were Daniel McCoy, Grant No. 386 of 300 acres and John McCoy, Grant No. 145 of 382 acres. Most likely that is this John and his brother Daniel.
Missouri Pioneers Vol. 1 has a list of Land Claims for 1809. No. 145 was James McCoy alias McKay (the person who claimed it) and the claim was issued in the name of John McCoy, land on the Cuivre - St. Charles County. #386 to Daniel McCoy, alias McKay (he claimed and had it issued in his name), also on the Cuivre in St. Charles.
History of Lincoln Co., MO, pg. 252, has a letter from John H. Brown of Texas. It lists men of Missouri, including "numerous family of McCoy, all good Indian fighters, came from Lincoln - Daniel, Joseph, "Devil" John and others. Wife of Joseph was a daughter of Captain Clark. "Devil" John, who killed a fellow soldier near Stout's Fort in Lincoln, after the war of 1815, drifted into Arkansas and entered Texas several years before any of the others."
But the Dewitt Colony web site believes their marriage was much earlier:
Joseph Hill and Catherine Clark McCoy. Joseph McCoy, oldest child born about 1791 of John "Padre" and Martha Dunbar McCoy came with his father's family to Texas. Although land records say Joseph arrived 26 Jan 1829 with his wife Catherine, daughter of Major Christopher Clark of Kentucky, and five children, probably: Prospect Clark, Green, Elizabeth, Christopher and Joseph L. (or possibly an infant born in MO which died--Joseph L. was born 1 Nov 1827 at Old Station on the Lavaca), the family of 7 is listed with children Prospect, Green, Elizabeth, Christopher and a male infant in the 1828 census of the colony. Two other children were born in Texas, Richard Texas M. on 22 Dec 1830 on Peach Creek, and Lowrey Sylvestor McCoy on 12 Feb 1835 on Sandies Creek. Prospect Clark, Green and Joseph McCoy married daughters of Zachariah and Rosanna Chinault Davis. Prospect married Elizabeth Ann Davis August 18, 1840, Green married Susan, and Joseph L. married Eliza in 1848. Daughter Elizabeth wed Christopher Williams in Washington Co and later Archibald Gibson in Gonzales Co. Richard Texas married Matilda Caroline "Carrie" Crane, and Lowrey S. married Ann Elizabeth Little. Christopher, a lifelong bachelor, lived with his widowed mother Catherine after their father's death in June 1836 near Neches or Washington-on-the-Brazos on the Brazos River where he became ill during the Runaway Scrape. Widow Catherine and family are listed in the 1850 census of Gonzales Co, Peach Creek District: 12-12, McCoy, Caterine, 53, f, $13,284, Ky; McCoy, Cristepher, 28, m, Mo; McCoy,Texas, 18, m, Texas; McCoy, Laury C., 14, f, Texas.

John seems to have been the "head" of the DeWitt colony McCoy clan. John and two of his sons (Joseph and Jesse) were 3 of 6 McCoys who arrived in the DeWitt colony, Gonzales county, TX, and received land grants. John arrived with wife (Martha) and 2 children (Daniel and Louisa) March 9, 1827.
