Individual Details
Daniel MCCOY
(Bet 1770 and 1774 - 1844)
General Index Card printed from Family Tree Maker CD146, Military Records; U.S. Soldiers, 1784-1811, says Daniel McCoy, Capt. Journey's Company, Riflemen, Louisiana Territory Militia, 1809, Private.
History of St. Charles, Montgomery and Warrent Counties Missouri on page 103 lists names of pioneers of the county. In Cuivre Twp. were Daniel McCoy, Grant No. 386 of 300 acres and John McCoy, Grant No. 145 of 382 acres. Most likely that is this Daniel and his brother John, not the father.
Missouri Pioneers Vol. 1 has a list of Land Claims for 1809. No. 145 was James McCoy alias McKay (the person who claimed it) and the claim was issued in the name of John McCoy, land on the Cuivre - St. Charles County. #386 to Daniel McCoy, alias McKay (he claimed and had it issued in his name), also on the Cuivre in St. Charles.

Daniel McCoy, for whom McCoy's Creek is named, came to Missouri, or Upper Louisiana, in 1797, in company with his brothers, John and Joseph, and his father-in-law, Henry Zumwalt. In 1804 Mr. McCoy was commissioned Lieutenant of a company of Militia in St. Charles district, and served until the close of the Indian War in 1815, when he was discharged. His discharge papers were signed by Capt. Bailey, who was First Lieutenant in Capt. Callaway's company before the death of the latter. Mr. McCoy married Rachel Zumwalt, by whom he had eight children: John, Frances, Sarah, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mahala, Margaret and Joseph. John died single. Frances married her cousin, William McCoy, a son of James McCoy, who settled in St. Charles County, in 1814. They had ten children: Nathan, Rachel, Susan, Lucinda, John, Elizabeth, Mary, William, James M. and Frances. Sarah McCoy married Fred Keishler, who settled in Lincoln County. Nancy married John Cain, who settled in St. Charles County. Elizabeth married Phillip Cannon, of St. Charles County. Mahala married James Cain, of St. Charles County. Joseph died a bachelor, in St. Charles County, in 1849. (Children of James McCoy, Sr.) James Jr., came to Missouri with his father in 1814. He married Rachel Doty, and settled in Lincoln County. Four of his brothers: John, Martin, Benjamin and David, also settled in that county.
John McCoy, Sr., brother of Daniel, had four sons: David, John, Joseph and Timothy. David and John settled in Texas. Timothy, usually called Tim, was an original character, and we give some anecdotes of him elsewhere. He married Sarah Van Burkleo, daughter of William Van Burkleo.

Daniel McCoy was among the band of Gonzales volunteers under Dr. James H.C. Miller who responded to a Comanche depredation in 1835 on a French and Mexican pack train on its way to Mexico. Daniel McCoy with Mathew Caldwell and Ezekial Williams were sent forward to determine the bands position when from behind Daniel was grasped by the tails of his long coat by an Indian from the bushes. According to author John Henry Brown ..."but 'Old Dan' as he was called, threw his arms backward and slipped from the garment without stopping, exclaiming,'Take it, d--n you!'" The relationship of Daniel McCoy to the John McCoy's of DeWitt Colony and whether this is the same Daniel McCoy receiving title to the sitio east of the Gonzales town tract on the Sandy Fork of Peach Creek is not completely clear. The fact that Daniel and Joseph McCoy Jr. list identical arrival dates in DeWitt land records suggest that they may have been related. The reference to"Old Dan" suggests that he might have been up in age in 1835. Daniel McCoy (b. bef 1774), son of John and Martha Humphrey McCoy, brother of John "Padre" McCoy Sr., would have been at least 61 years old and maybe older at the time. Daniel and Rachel Zumwalt McCoy had children John Lewis (b. 1798), Frances (Fanny), Sarah (Sally), Nancy, Mahala, Margaret (Peggy), Joseph (b. 1811) and Elizabeth (Betsy). Daughter Margaret (b. 1809-1812) married first Ambrose Tinney in 1828 in St. Charles Co, MO. According to descendant Tory Crook, this is Ambros eFenney. Margaret McCoy and Ambrose Tinney had children John, Griffin (b. 23 Sep 1834), Addison B. (b. abt 1837) and Jacob (b. abt 1840). John (b. 14 Mar 1830 in MO) and a son who died before the 1850 census arrived with the Ambrose Tinney family. The marriage record of 30 Oct 1828 of an Ambrose "Tena" and Peggy McCoy is in St. Charles Co, MO records. Ambrose Tinney died before 1845 and Margaret McCoy Tinney later married Alexander Morris in 1848 in Gonzales Co, TX, but later divorced. They had children George Washington, Isabel and Alexander Jr. The 1850 census of Caldwell Co lists household: MORRIS: Alexander 28 m PA; Margaret 35 f MO; TINNEY, John 20 m MO; Griffin 17 m MO;Austin 13 m TX; Jacob 10 m TX; MORRIS: George W. 2 m TX; Isabella 6/12 f TX

Was among the band of Gonzales volunteers under Dr. According to author John Henry Brown ..."but 'Old Dan' as he was called, threw his arms backward and slipped from the garment without stopping, exclaiming, 'Take it, damn you!'" The relationship of Daniel McCoy to the John McCoy's of DeWitt Colony and whether this is the same Daniel McCoy receiving title to the sitio east of the Gonzales town tract on the Sandy Fork of Peach Creek is not completely clear. The fact that Daniel and Joseph McCoy Jr. list identical arrival dates in DeWitt land records suggest that they may have been related. The reference to "Old Dan" suggests that he might have been up in age in 1835.
