"LIFE VIEW - MARTHA MAI 1906 - 2008
Longtime Wallace County, Kansas resident Martha H. Mai, 101, diedFriday, March 28, 2008, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.
She was born April 19, 1906, in Trego County, Kansas, the daughter ofJacob George and Katherine Elizabeth (Mai) Deines. The family moved toRussell County in November of that year. She attended 9 grades atMilberger schools, southwest of Russell.
On April 27, 1924, she and William Mai were married at Zion LutheranChurch, Trego Center, Kansas south of Wa Keeney. They lived in thehouse of William's parents, four of his brothers and a sister untilearly 1926 when they moved several miles west and built a small house.The family needed more land to farm and bought a quarter of land innorthwest Greeley County in 1935. The rain didn't fall, the dust blewand crops failed. A relative in Wallace County helped them find landto rent and they moved in March of 1936 to the place still in thefamily.
The next 6 years were hard and William at times talked of moving to abetter place to farm but she would insist that "where there's a will,there's a way" and finally the first good crop was harvested in 1942and they were again able to buy land and prospered.
Her memberships included the Sharon Lutheran Church and Women of theEvangelical Lutheran Church of America, and she had been a member ofHomemakers' Unit. She especially enjoyed crocheting, even past her100th birthday. During her retirement days, she helped prepare overone thousand quilts for Lutheran World Relief.
Preceding her in death were her husband William Mai, who died June 11,1989; an infant daughter Katherine Elizabeth; one son Carl Everett;daughter-in-law Ruth Mai; brothers Emanuel, Paul, Sieghardt, Herbert;sisters Helen, Marie, Mollie; half-brothers Daniel and Alfred; andhalf-sisters Eleanora and Anita.
Surviving family include six children Arthur Mai and his wife Euniceof Sharon Springs; Raymond Mai and his wife Ardyce of Lindsborg;Vernon Mai and his wife Sylvia of Linn; William V. Mai and his wifeWilma of Sharon Springs; Marilyn Pickett and her husband Pat ofSlater, Iowa; David Mai and his wife Linda of Sharon Springs; sixteengrandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; one half-sisterElfrieda Deines Graham of Tumwater, Washington; and threesister-in-laws Marjorie Deines of Port Angeles, Washington; MarilynDeines of Olympia, Washington; and Elfriede Mai of Greenville, NorthCarolina.
The funeral was Friday, April 4, at 10:30 AM MT, at the SharonLutheran Church in Sharon Springs, with Pastor Jane Rothmanofficiating. Burial was in the Sharon Springs Cemetery. Arrangementswere by Koons Funeral Home."
