He was also a tanner and currier and worked at that business until October, 1861, when he enlisted in the Second Regiment Berdan U.S. Sharpshooters. He served in Company E till the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged. He married Mary E. Cole, of Westport, N.Y., September 6, 1865 and settled on the home place with his brother, George N. He sold his interest in the property to his brother in September, 1868, and removed to Hoag's Corner, N.Y., where he now resides." Caverly, 1872. [NOTE: Hoag Corner is in Rensselaer County.]
There was a stock brand registered by Willard C. Brown in Garfield County, CO, 1 Aug 1885 in Book A page 217. That is another mountain county to the north and west of Leadville, Lake County, CO, so it is definitely possible it was by the same man. Deed recorded in Lake Co., CO, 5 Nov 1897, Book 172, pg 194 #107961.Willard C. Brown & John Herpst paid $12,000 to John Buchanan, all of Lake County, The Buck Knob, the Buck Knob Fraction & the Abbie J. Lode mining claims being part of the Buck Knob group of mining claims situate on Chicago Ridge between Buckeye Gulch & the Denver Rio Grande Railway on the East, in California Mining District. Parties to pay $6,000: $1,000 paid to S. S. Rowland and $5,000 to John Buchanan, pmt to be made when the claims are sold again or within two years and ten months from the date of this bond. Buyers shall pay taxes on the property. When payments are all made, Quitclaim Deed will be given to buyers or to such others as they direct.
