5th Regiment Vermont Volunteers 22 Aug 1861 to 26 June 1865. Pg. 488 states that George Brown of the 5th Regiment, Company G, was one of 14 veterans who re-enlisted to whom the Town of Pittsford paid a bounty of $100.00. It further states that he was wounded May 12 and 14, 1864. A web site has rosters of Vermont regiments and George N. Brown is listed with the dates above.

After he married Mary, who was of Brandon, they resided some time on the homestead in Pittsford. "He has recently removed to Brandon."

Brown of the same place party of the second part Witnesses that the said party of the first part for and inconsideration of the sum of four hundred dollars ($400.00), lawful money of the United States of America to him in hand paid by the said party of the second part, at or before the executing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, has remised released and quit claimed and by these presents does remise release and quit claim unto the said party of the second part and to his heirs and assigns forever the improvements, buildings, fences ,irrigating ditches, water and water rights with all and singular the tenements, ???? and appurtenances situated on the North east quarter of Section eight in Township five South of Range one West situated in the said County of Madison and Territory of Montana with the possession and all right and title which the said party of the first part has or may have in and to said tract of land or any part or parcel thereof and the reversion and reversions remainder and ???? rents issues and profits thereof property possession claim and demand whatsoever as well in law as in Equity of the said party of the first part of in and to said premises and every part and parcel thereof,with the appurtenances. Brown and Emeline E. Brown his wife of Madison County Montana Territory,have this day bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain,sell, convey and turn over to Nathan G. This Indenture, made this 16th day of October in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Ninety-four between George Brown an unmarried man of Madison County State of Montana party of the first part, and Edward Mueller of the same County and State, party of the second part, witnesseth, That the part of the first part, for and inconsideration of twenty five ($25.00) dollars, lawful money of the United States of America, to him in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, has Granted, Bargained, Sold, Remised, Released,Conveyed and Quit Claimed and by these presents do Grant, Bargain,Sell, Remise, Release, Convey and Quit Claim unto the said party of the second part and to his heirs and assigns forever, all the right title and interest, estate claim and demands of said party of the first part of in and to that certain portion, claim and mining right title and property on these certain ledges, vein, lode or deposits of quartz and other rock in-place, containing precious metals of gold,silver and other metals, and situated in the Rabbit Mining District,County of Madison and State of Montana, and described as follows to-wit:
An undivided one-sixth and interest in and to the following named Quartz lode claims. The "Zulo Maid", "Congo", "Bushline", and the"Taylur" according to the description now of record in the office of the Clerk and Recorder in and for Madison County, State of Montana.
Together with all the dips, piles and angles and also all the metals,ores, gold silver and metal bearing quartz rock and earth therein and all the rights, privileges and franchises thereto incident, appendant and appurtenant, or therewith usually had and enjoyed and also all the estate, right, title and interest, possession, claim and demand whatsoever of the said party of the first part of, in or to the premises and every part and parcel thereof.
To Have and to Hold all and singular, the said premises, together with the appurtenances and privileges thereto incident, unto the said party of the second part.

George Brown sold to Edward Mueller for $25.00, 1/4 interest in the Mocking Bird and the Parrot Quartz Lode Mining Claims in the Rabbit Mining District, Madison Co., MT. Wording and date of the deed are the same as the previous one.

Book 78 page 417, Madison Co., MT:
This Indenture, made this 23 day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and eight between George M. [sic] Brown & Montana B. Gorham both of McAllister Mont. parties of the first part and George M. [sic] Brown of Stockton California the party of the second part. Witnesseth, That the parties of the first part, for and in consideration of the sum of One $1.00 Dollar, Lawful money of the U.S. to them in hand paid by the said party of the second part, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, do remise, release and forever quitclaim unto the said party of the second part and to his heirs and assigns, the following described real estate, situated in the Meadow Creek unorganized Mining District County of Madison and State of Montana, to-wit: One half interest in Prolific Lode Mining Claim, more fully described in Book 23 page 568 of the records of Madison County Montana. [The rest of the deed is typed boiler-plate].Signed George N. Brown and Mont B. Gorham. Witnesses T. I Vincent and Eugene McCullum.

Certificate: Know Ye, That George N. Brown, late private G Co. 5 Regiment, Vermont vols., a member of The National Home for disabled Volunteer Soldiers, who was admited on the First day of May, one thousand eight hundred and Eighty Eight, is hereby Honorably Discharged by reason of his own request. No objection to his re-admission is known to exist.
Said George N. Brown was born in Vermont is 46 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, --eyes, -- hair. Disability, Hernia, and by occupation when admitted a Mechanic.
Pensioner at $8.00 a month. Certificate No. 321349.
Given at Southern Branch, National Home D.V.S. this Sixteenth day of December, 1890. Signed, R. Good??? Governor." Copy of certificate received from Art Brown.

Obituary in the Stockton Daily Independent, 06 Dec 1910, reads as follows: BROWN-
In this city, December 4, 1910; George N. Brown, Sr., father of Arthur C. and Mable V. Brown of this city, George N. Brown, Jr. of Montana, a native of Vermont. Aged 66 yrs, 3 mos, and 15 days.
The funeral will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, Dec 6, 1910 at 2 pm in front of the family residence at No. 23 W Maple street. Interment in Rural cemetery. Friends and aquaintences are invited to attend.
An additional item in the Stockton Record, Tuesday, December 6, 1910, has this:
"GEORGE BROWN MUSTERED OUT
Old Soldier Answers Last Call
Funeral of Past Commander of Rawlins Post G.A.R. held this afternoon.
The funeral of George N. Brown, Sr., the aged and respected member of Rawlins Post No. 23 G.A.R. who died Sunday, was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock under the auspices of the Grand Army, from his late residence, No. 23 West Maple Street. The members of the G.A.R. assembled in a body to pay their last tribute to the deceased.
Mr. Brown was a native of Vermont, aged 66 years, 3 months and 15 days. He leaves a daughter, Mable V. Brown, of Stockton, and two sons, Arthur C. Brown of Stockton and George N. Brown, Jr., of Montana.
Mr. Brown was a past commander of Rawlins Post and for years was an active worker in the ranks of the organization. He went to Salt Lake last spring as a delegate from the local Post to the Grand Encampment of the G.A.R. Following the encampment, he went to Montana to visit his son for a time and inspect lands in which he was interested."
