State vs. Em'l S. Dugger, Sarah Venable, prosecutor, Case Bastardy
In this case Issue having been made up to try the truth of the case as to the father of the Female Bastard child charged in the warrant the defendants ..... being sworn and examined and the premises being seen and fully understood by this court, it is therefor considered by the court that the said defendant is the father of the aforesaid Female Bastard and that he pay to the Plaintiff S. Venable for the support of said child (to wit) For the first year, Forty Dollars, for the second year, Thirty Dollars and for the Third year Twenty Dollars payable in the thru (?) forgoing annual installments and further that defendant enter into bond with approved security in effect that he keep said Bastard from becoming a county charge. From which judgement the sd Deft. prayed an appeal to the next Term of the Circuit Court to be held for the county of Johnson at the courthouse in Taylorsville on the 2nd Monday on March next (1840) which is Granted. Thereupon the defendant Emanuel S. Dugger together with Dan'l Dugger his security came into court and acknowledged themselves indebted to the State of Tennessee in the sum of Two Hundred and fifty Dollars to be jointly and severally..... of their goods and chattles Lands and Tenemants to the use of the State to be void on condition that the said Emanuel S. Dugger shall prosecute with effect and appeal this day prayed and Granted upon a Judgement rendered against him by the worshipful the/// County Court of Johnson County upon a charge exhibited by the State and Sarah Venable against him of Bastardy, or in case he shall fail he will pay all such costs and charges that shall be awarded against him... for wrongfully taking said appeal, and shall abide all such orders as the court shall make in the premises.

Bastardy case - Court confirmed former judgement of $90 - $50 first year $30 2nd year and $20 3rd year. Receipt exhibited in court by Emanuel L. Dugger he transcribed in full satisfaction of judgement. "Received of Emanuel L. Dugger the amt in full of all dues demands and charges that I have against him for having begotten by me a Female Bastard child now about seven months old upon which I charged before T. W. Warren Esquire in Johnson County filed my affidavit in Support of said Charge against the said Emanuel L. Dugger. Signed this 23rd day May 1840.
