Joseph VENABLE

(Bef 1788 - 1826 - 1830)

In 1992-1995 I exchanged information and material with Capt. Tom Gentry, of Mountain City, TN, in Johnson County. He was considered quite a local historian and was connected to the Venable and Worley families. In a family group sheet, he said that Joseph Venable might be "William Joseph". He did not have a birth year for Joseph. When I sent him a family group sheet for Lewis, he returned it with additions, one of which was to say that Joseph was born in North Carolina. His first letter of 25 July 1992 said: "It appears that old Joe Venable from NC married Matilda Merritt (1792-1866), a daughter of Major Merritt, of Montgomery Co. Va. When Joe Venable died she married" second: Valentine Van Huss (he died 1856 Johnson Co. Tn. His first wife was: Julianna Tucker, Wythe Co. Va. Old Valentine Van Huss was age 82 in 1850 census when Matilda was age 58, so he was much older than she." A bit later in the letter, he makes another comment about "Old Valentine".

Tom Gentry passed away in 2005. I wonder how he knew Joseph was "old" and if he was also a lot older than Matilda.

It is likely that Joseph served in the War of 1812. Possible:
U.S., War of 1812 Service Records, 1812-1815 U.S., War of 1812 Service Records, 1812-1815
Name: Joseph Venable
Company: 2 REGIMENT WEST TENNESSEE MILITIA.
Rank - Induction: PRIVATE
Rank - Discharge: PRIVATE
Roll Box: 216
Microfilm Publication: M602

There were two listings for a Joseph M. Venable, but there is also a pension card for him, with a widow, Mary, and it specifies surgeon, Capt. Dyers Field and Staff.

Lois Smith sent me a report in 2000 and has that Joseph's middle name was William.

"More than a hundred descendants of Leroy and Permelia Isaacs Venable met Sunday, September 2, 1990, at the old home place of the late Matt and Verlie Venable near Vincent, KY for their annual homecoming. The family cemetery is on the hill overlooking Begley's Peaceful Valley Lake.
"During the Civil War the Venables first made their way to Owsley County from Lee County, VA, by wagons and caravans searching for a peaceful land. Leroy was but a lad as he came with his parents, Leroy Sr. and Rachell Venable and other family members to settle in the valley on Buck Creek. Leroy grew up and later married Permelia Isaacs (Aunt Melia or Sis) and raised eleven children, whom now have gone to their reward. Six of the original family members were represented along with a host of cousins and friends of this close knit and God fearing family.
"Almost a century ago the "Venable Meeting" was first started at the request of Leroy Venable, the first to be held being a Memorial Service to him on the second Sunday in October, 1904, the year which marked his passing. Since then, except for a few years between, this tradition has been carried on meeting annually for over fifty years, many of the clan plan and work the year 'round that this eveny may be a special one for all."

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Check Ashe Co., NC, for possible origin for Joseph. Lewis Venable's daughter, Lucinda Jane, married Abner Eggers there, so the family probably had connections there.

July 2013 I spoke with James Jeffrey, head genealogy librarian at the Denver Public Library, about Joseph. He pointed out that for Joseph to have signed for himself at his marriage, he had to be at least 21, so born no later than 1788.

The book "A History of Michael Worley" by Audrey L. Woodruff, on page 10, says that Valentine VanHuss' second or third wife was Mrs. Matilda Venable, "widow of a Methodist minister."
